The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
