The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
